Eco-Friendly Gifts That Give Back This Holiday Season
December 21, 2017 by
If the friends and family you’re buying for this year have everything they need or if perhaps you’re just stuck for a last minute gift to buy someone, start a new Christmas tradition of giving gifts that give back. Here are some ways to do just that.
Give a Reusable Gift
Who doesn’t appreciate an eco-friendly gift that can be used over and over again? Think everyday items like reusable bags, decorative cloth napkins, stainless steel mugs, reusable water bottles, etc.
Donate to a Charity or Foundation
For those who have everything they need this Christmas, consider donating to one of their favorite charities on their behalf. If they are animal lovers, why not adopt a gray wolf or make a contribution to a local animal shelter in their name? If they’re passionate about education, give the priceless gift of education to a girl in a developing country. Or if your gift receiver is an environmentalist, choose an environmental charity that focuses on ways to promote preservations and sustainable development for the environment.
Physical Charitable Gifts
When you donate to a good cause on behalf of someone else, there’s usually an option to send a card or email to inform the recipient you’ve done so, but if a note isn’t enough, there are still physical products out there that are tied to companies that will donate a certain percentage of their profits to charities or give back in some way.
TOMS is a great example of a company that does this. For every product or pair of shoes you buy, TOMS will help a person in need. “One for one.” Warby Parker offers a similar incentive but with eyeglasses. There are also companies like Ivory Ella that sell clothing and accessories to protect elephants and prevent illegal poaching. Whichever eco-friendly gifts you choose, just make sure they are sustainable, were ethically sourced, and are gifts that give back to the planet in some way.
Have you bought any eco-friendly gifts for your friends or family this year? If so, we’d love to hear what they are in the comments below.
