Now that summertime is here, everyone can come over for BBQs, pool parties and any other outdoor activities. Nobody wants to have some annoying weeds haunting our yards, bothering us with their presence and ruining our gardens. Using pesticides is probably the first option for getting rid of weeds, but research has found that is harmful to us. There has to be an easier way to remove these pesky things.
The Problem with Pesticides
There are nearly 20,000 pesticide poisonings among farm workers every year. Besides the severe poisonings, there are long-term, chronic health effects such as cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, asthma, birth defects and neurological harms, including developmental delays and learning disabilities. Children of farm workers are especially at risk. Pesticides cling to workers’ skin and clothing long after they return home, putting their children at risk of being poisoned.
Battle Menacing Weeds without Pesticides
There are a few ways you can rid your garden your weeds without using harmful or dangerous chemical sprays. First, the most obvious way would be to pick those annoying weeds by hand. If you want to get to the root of the weed problem, you’re going to have to get your hands dirty. Plucking out those pesky weeds could a bit of a workout and on those hot summer days it’s probably the last thing you want to do. But, like everyone always says, if you want something done right, do it yourself! Or punish your children by making them do it for you.
Another way to get rid of weeds is to burn and drown them to death. All you need is to boil water and dump it on the area you want dead. It’s an easy way to get those weeds that pop up from cracks in the sidewalk or driveway.
Vinegar or lemon juice is another quick and easy way to kill weeds. All you need to do is spray it onto the weeds and by the next day, they’ll be dead. Lemon juice isn’t as efficient as vinegar, but it still has enough acidity to melt the weeds in your yard to make room for some new plants!
If all else fails, kill it with fire. Probably not the safest way to go about getting rid of weeds, but if you have a blowtorch, it’s a fun and environmentally safe way to do it. Just make sure you don’t create a small forest fire in your backyard.
Use of Dangerous Pesticides Needs to be Stopped!
A healthy, safe, and fair food system would protect us all and safeguard the health and economic needs of farmworkers, farmers, rural communities, and consumers. Shifting away from dependence on harmful pesticides is a huge step toward this goal. But as long as harmful pesticides are in use, farmworkers need better protections in the field.
