Like most of the cities in the US, Pittsburg too has been facing the question of whether to go plastic free or not. After a lot of discussion and opposition, the city finally seems to have made its mind. At a recent meeting, the City Council decided to give tentative acceptance to custom printed reusable grocery bags.
Reusable Grocery Bags Making Way for a Cleaner Pittsburg
Under this unanimous vote, the council members agreed on passing the ordinance which will prohibit retailers and grocery store owners in Pittsburg to hand out one-time use plastic bags to their customers. The main reason for approving this ordinance is said to be the increasing menace created by plastic bags in the city. The authority is tired of looking at the plastic bags that end up blocking the waterways or strew around the streets.
The matter will be back for another public hearing in the council. After this, a formal consideration will take place in the meeting to be held on 21st October. In case the ordinance gets approved, it will come into effect from January next year. This will also make Pittsburg the first city in east County to implement such kind of a ban.
Though the ban will be applicable on retail and grocery stores in the city, restaurants won’t be liable to follow it. Apart from restaurants, charitable organizations will also be exempt from the ban. On the other hand, protective or plastic garment bags will still be allowed to be given out for meat, prescription medicines, fresh produce and prepared foods.
The whole idea behind this ordinance is to promote the habit of bringing custom printed reusable grocery bags among the residents. The members of the city council believe that this habit will help to a great extent in cutting down the environmental damage done by plastic bags. The waste reduction coordinator of the city, Laura Wright said that plastic bags are turning out to be a major eye sore and this ordinance will help in reducing plastic waste.
Custom Printed Reusable Grocery Bags is a Better Option Than Plastic Bags
Plastic bags have been in the news for all the wrong reasons since a long time now. They have been creating many problems in the environment making it necessary for the concerned authorities to come up with a relevant way of tackling them. Though the final decision is yet to come out, the city hopes that it will be able to get rid of some it’s plastic bag waste by resorting to reusable bags.
