Eco-friendly Projects for the Classroom
Saving the earth, taking care of our ecology, and protecting nature is everybody's responsibility. Everyone, children, teenagers, and adults should be involved. Several schools worldwide are getting involved through eco-friendly projects. Renewable energy such as solar hot water systems and solar electric panels are two widespread options for a classroom.
Another notable mention is going paperless or reducing paper by implementing digital learning. Schools are making their environment green enough for learning. These schools are setting up a standard to ensure that children are interested in our environment and its sustainability.
Eco Learning in a Classroom
The first Earth Day happened in the United States on April 22, 1970. That day almost ten (10) percent of the US population participated in teach-ins across college campuses. This was 20 million citizens, over 2,000 universities and colleges, and over 10,000 public schools
In a few weeks from now, the 53rd Earth Day would be celebrated and schools have fully embraced eco-friendly projects. An example is a school located in Assam, Northeast India whose form of school fee is not money as other schools accept. Rather, the school only accepts plastic waste as a form of fee. Students of this school pledge not to burn plastic but to hand plastic waste to the school.
Schools are teaching junior learners ways to protect the earth, they have achieved this through eco-friendly lessons and projects that are engaging and fun.
The old saying, “Action speaks louder than words” challenges people to put in the work. Speaking about our ecosystem, the climate, and a sustainable planet is not enough. We need to do more— we have to take action. Parents and teachers alike need to create time for environmental awareness projects and inspire young learners.
We have put together three (3) eco-friendly projects that teachers could engage their students in. Some of these projects could be concluded within a class period while others are going to take time and could serve as assignments.
These projects are fun and could be adopted by parents who want to nurture eco-friendly children.
Establish A Green Club
Establishing a green club is a creative way to influence juniors, a green club is a special student community that is focused on developing students who care for the environment. Green clubs hold meetings and activities. This includes eco-friendly lessons where teachers teach and show students how to care for their environments.
Green club members could be challenged to learn more about the environment and talk to or teach other members how they could all take care of the environment.
Teachers could also launch a green competition within the club, this competition is a creative project to engage pupils, and some creative games like eco-essays, gardening, or tree planting could be held.
Young learners love competitions, they put in extra effort to make themselves or their team come on top. So, engage your pupils with green competitions. Set an award, and praise all participants because this will sow seeds of healthy competition and care for our environment.
Recycling Lessons: Water bottle campaign
Numerous people, young and mature, still throw trash around, littering the streets and putting society at risk of disasters such as a flood.
It is good to teach children that inappropriate disposal of waste is an environmental hazard. Recycling is one way to teach your pupils or children how to be eco-friendly.
Teachers could organize a water bottle campaign, proper disposable containers are to be positioned in strategic places. When water bottles or plastics are gathered everyone who partakes in the campaign would go on a fun trip to a recycling facility. Pupils are shown how waste is utilized, this would create a new mindset that nothing is completely a waste.
During this campaign, teach pupils the benefits of recycling and the effects of inappropriate waste disposal.
Classroom tree Planting
Tree planting is an engaging eco-friendly project that anyone could engage in, it is fun and beneficial to the environment. Children are natural gardeners, they are captivated by planting so this is an easy one for them although they would need assistance.
Teach your pupils the benefits of planting trees, remember to teach them how plants absorb carbon dioxide formed during respiration and produce oxygen needed for survival.
If the school does not have an environment for tree planting you can collaborate with the local authorities or other private organizations Children love positive results so, remember to choose fast-growing trees.
Proper education would make children understand the importance of protecting the environment. This is why you have to start teaching them now! Go ahead, and engage your pupils or children in any or all of these eco-friendly projects.
