Take Your Reusable Bags On A Walk
Mar 20, 2020
Self-isolating during the Coronavirus outbreak is the safe thing to do for yourself and your family even if you do not have any symptoms. However, this does not mean that you need to sit physically inside your house all day every day. It is a good idea to go outside, go for a walk, or simply sit in your backyard. If you absolutely must run to a grocery store or local market for supplies, you need your reusable bags.
This is where Custom Earth Promos can help you when you have no symptoms but want to be safe.
How Do Your Reusable Bags Help?
Everyone who is asymptomatic and self-isolating can leave the house with their own recycled and reusable shopping bags. When you buy these bags from us, you can carry food home from the grocery store, take a picnic into your backyard, or carry supplies when you take a walk. This is also a nice way to carry items to elderly neighbors that you are looking after.
What Happens When You Get Home?
When you get home with your reusable bags, they can be unloaded and disinfected. People who are trying to be extra-careful can easily clean their bags, store them, and use them again in the future. If you were to get a plastic bag or a paper bag from the grocery store, you can't really clean them. Plus, you can easily carry reusable bags when you are wearing gloves. Your gloves would tear up or crinkle paper/plastic bags.
You Can Remain Active And Safe At The Same Time
Yes, you can leave the house. Yes, you can carry reusable bags made from recycled materials wherever you go. To be extra-safe, you can clean the bag when you get home. This is safe for you, safe for anyone you visit, and more cost-effective for your family.
(You can even take these bags to the beach or on vacation when this crisis is finally over.)
Go Green: Eco-Friendly Products We Should All Be Using
Nov 12, 2019
After the shocking wake-up call of the documentary Blue Planet, more and more people are waking up to the unsustainable way humans are living. In fact, 97% of climate scientists agree we are facing a global warming emergency. But there's hope for our planet. If we all do our part to make ourselves a little bit greener, then we can drastically reduce the issues our planet is facing. In this post, you'll discover some easy swaps to eco-friendly products you can make today to do your part.
Creating a Sustainable Future
If you ask people why they think we need to become more environmentally friendly as a society, you'll hear a variety of answers. Some want to stop the mass extinction of hundreds of endangered species. Others want to clean the oceans of the millions of tons of plastic.
But in a recent survey by sustainable earth, the number one reason given for changing our ways was to make sure that future generations had just that – a future.
Now, you may ask what difference can we make as individuals? And there are indeed just 20 firms responsible for a third of all carbon emissions today. But the choices we make as individuals in our day to day life do play a part in forging a sustainable future.
If as a collective we all made some simple lifestyle changes, those small impacts can start to add up and make a difference. It causes the government and large corporations to sit up and take notice. These changes can be as simple as swapping one product on your next trip to the supermarket, choosing a responsible eco-friendly company over an oil-guzzling conglomerate, or simply reusing that coffee cup.
There are many cheap and easy ways that we as individuals can make a change for the better. Below, we will explore some of the different ways we can make a sustainable future possible for the next generation.
The Problem with Disposable and Single-use Products
First of all, what are single-use products and why are they such a problem? These are products intended for one use and one use only. They are usually made of plastic and are a huge cause for concern.
Examples of single-use products include:
Drink bottles
Straws
Food containers and packaging
Shopping bags
Cigarette butts
Coffee cups and lids
Originally created to make our lives easier, these single-use items are wreaking havoc on our environment. It can take thousands of years for a single plastic bag to degrade. Now, there are over 5 trillion pieces of plastic clogging our oceans. And this issue isn't going away. As the plastic degrades or breaks down, it leaches chemicals into the waterways and air, causing untold issues scientists are still trying to measure.
This pervasive problem is spreading to every corner of the planet. Alarming new studies have even found ...
Do You Remember the Milkman? Well, He's Coming Back with Loop
Sep 7, 2019
A new shopping platform announced at this year's World Economic Forum aims to change the way consumers buy many brand-name products.
Loop, as the platform is called, aims to do away with disposable containers for products such as shampoo and laundry detergent from some of the world's biggest manufacturers. Instead, your goods will be delivered in sleek, reusable containers that will be picked up at your door, washed, and refilled.Do away with disposable containers by replacing all of your bags and bottles with reusable ones from Custom Earth Promos.
Tom Szaky, CEO of New Jersey-based international recycling company TerraCycle, the brains behind Loop, explains his business model:
"Loop is about the future of consumption. And one of the tenants is that garbage shouldn't exist. Removing plastics from the ocean is not enough. We need to get at the whole idea of disposability and single-use items. We're going back to the milkman model of the 1950s. You buy the milk but the milk company owns the bottle, which you leave in the milk box to be picked up when you're done with it."TerraCycle and Loop CEO Tom Szaky
Companies partnering with Loop include PepsiCo, Nestle, and Procter & Gamble, among other top brands.
"Our goal is that by 2030, all of our packaging will be reusable or recyclable."Procter & Gamble Vice-President and Chief Sustainability Officer Virginie Helias
Helias has said that Loop
"...is a very new idea and somewhat risky because no one has tried it. But the response has very positive, and we've selected 10 of our brands to be a part of the pilot project, with a plan to add more later pending positive results."Procter & Gamble Vice-President and Chief Sustainability Officer Virginie Helias
For example, Pantene shampoo
"...will come in a beautifully decorated, lightweight-aluminum pump container. Tide in the US will come in a stainless-steel bottle with a durable twist cap. Cascade will come in ultra-durable packaging. Crest mouthwash will come in a glass bottle. The idea is ultra-durability, convenience and also ultra-luxurious packaging."Procter & Gamble Vice-President and Chief Sustainability Officer Virginie Helias
Haagen-Dazs ice cream, a Nestle product, will be delivered in a double-walled, stainless-steel tub that's designed to keep the ice cream cold for longer.
Loop is even helping take care of products that would otherwise have to be thrown away. Instead of adding dirty disposable diapers to landfills, soiled diapers can, starting in the Paris, France, area, be placed in sleek, durable containers. When full, Loop will pick up the diaper container and deliver a clean, empty one. New technology allows them to process and recycle the diapers, something TerraCycle has already begun to do in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.
"We have only one planet, and we have to take care of it for the long term. We want to strive for Zero Waste at the production and consumption level. Loop is so ...
Climate Change Activist Greta Thunberg Takes Home the GQ
Sep 5, 2019
GQ just held their annual Men of the Year awards. With winners such as Hugo Boss' Most Stylish going to Scottish actor Richard Madden and Actor of the Year handed out to Taron Egerton for his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman, they did not discriminate when it came to gender. Climate activist Greta Thunberg took home the win for Game Changer of the Year.
The story of 16-year-old Greta Thunberg has been told time and time again. But, rarely, has it been told well.
Thunberg is the Swedish student who sparked the global school strike for climate change movement in August of last year. It was participated in by about 1.6 million people in 133 countries!
Thunberg has also graced the cover of Time magazine, met President Obama, and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She has given speeches at the UN; Davos, Switzerland; and the British Parliament.
Thunberg has become a symbol for a generation being ignored by a generation that won't have to suffer the consequences of not listening. In her speeches, she'll often state that we have 10 years to delay a chain reaction that will forever alter the future of our planet.
If we wait until she is 26 to tune in, it'll be too late.
You can find all of this information online. The question is: Which version of what you'll find is the correct one?
The cynical version claims that her parents pushed her into this, writing her speeches, which have been collected into a book titled No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference that's available from Penguin, and parading their daughter around to promote their cause. The optimistic version is quite the opposite. This version claims that her mother gave up her opera career for her daughter by agreeing to never fly again. She did this not for the planet but her daughter—who was depressed, not eating, not talking, and this cause became her path to recovery.
The truth, as is often found, lies somewhere in the middle.
Thunberg often sees her Asperger's as a superpower rather than a disability. She claims she sees the world more clearly and can't understand why humanity is ignoring what should be daily front-page news.
"I have Asperger's syndrome and, to me, almost everything is black or white. I think in many ways that we autistic are the normal ones and the rest of the people are pretty strange. They keep saying that climate change is an existential threat and the most important issue of all. And yet they just carry on like before."Climate Activist and GQ Game Changer of the Year Greta Thunberg at Parliament Square in London, England, on October 31, 2018
This explains the school strike for climate, refusing to fly, and a breakfast that was "about to go off."
Food is partly to blame for how this all began. Thunberg is a tiny girl, not even five feet tall, and much younger looking than she actually is. This is the result of a period of severe depression when she was 11 and the serious eating disorder that followed.
The family's ...
Aquamation Is the Eco-Friendly Way to Say Goodbye to Your Pets
Sep 1, 2019
Here at Custom Earth Promos, we've talked about eco-friendly ways to take care of a human body after a loved one passes, but what about your pets?
Kathy Chiavola never knew how happy the pair of dogs she adopted would make her.
"Possum and Pearl have appeared in books. They have hundreds of fans. They even have their own song."Nashville, Tennessee, Singer-Songwriter Kathy Chiavola
When Possum was unexpectedly lost this year, Chiavola was looking for a fitting way to memorialize her beloved dog. This is when she turned to Beloved Waters, Tennessee's first and only aquamation pet funeral service.
"We're an environmentally friendly alternative to pet cremation. If your pet passes, we use water-based technology to take care of your pet and process the remains for you."Beloved Waters Co-founder Shay Underwood
Chiavola had previously used flame-based cremation. She was very happy to learn about the environmentally friendly approach aquamation takes.
"When I called...I heard the voice of an angel. She was the sweetest, kindest lady and I knew she would take care of Possum's remains with the highest respect. I trusted them more than anyone and that proved to be the right way to go for me."Nashville, Tennessee, Singer-Songwriter Kathy Chiavola
Aquamation, better known by its technical name of alkaline hydrolysis, uses a solution of water, potassium hydroxide, and sodium hydroxide to break down remains. There are no fossil fuels and no emissions during this process.Reduce your emissions by switching out your single-use plastic for reusable bags and bottles.
Underwood said that the water is so clean, it can even be used to water farm crops!
Not only is it cleaner for the environment, aquamation uses 90 percent less energy than traditional, flame-based cremation. Underwood stated that this is the same amount of energy a family of five uses in a single day.
"Flame cremation of a pet is the same equivalent of driving a car 500 miles, as far as the carbon footprint goes."Beloved Waters Co-founder Shay Underwood
No pet is too big or too small for Beloved Waters. They can process up to 400 pounds and the machine has 14 private chambers, ensuring remains don't mix.
Another customer, Holly Potts, said her daughters were beside themselves with grief when the family's hamster died. But, after talking to Beloved Waters, they now "had something to look forward to" and planned a funeral for the beloved little pet.
"I felt like we dealt with it a little better."Holly Potts
Every animal is treated individually, regardless of their size, and placed in their own compartment before being lowered into the solution. The process takes 18 to 20 hours to complete. Ash remains are then air dried for three days and ground into a fine powder before being returned to the family.
The total turnaround time is five to seven days.
Each pet is returned with an inked paw print and fur clipping, along with the packaged remains. Underwood ...
Burning Amazon Sparks Surge in Eco Search Engine Usage: Ecosia
Aug 28, 2019
It has now gone viral that Brazil's rainforest is burning to bits. Last week, Custom Earth Promos brought you good news about biodiversity, writing about how Wales is trying to bring the fish back to Aberyswyth. Unfortunately, a loss of the Amazon Rainforest means a loss of some of the largest land biodiversity anywhere on the planet.
If this scares, saddens, angers, or moves you in any way, you may be able to help. But, can you save the rainforest from your desk? A spike in downloads for a search engine that's contributing profits to planting trees shows that people are looking for ways to help as the fires rage.
Experts say that while these efforts won't hurt, there are better ways to contribute.
Ecosia, the aforementioned search engine, founded in 2009, works with about 20 tree-planting organizations around the world. They hope to have a billion trees planted by 2020. The company, based in Berlin, Germany, has pledged to plant an additional 2 million trees in Brazil in response to the fires.
Using Microsoft Bing's search engine technology, Ecosia sells ads, like many other tech companies. But, instead of awarding shareholders, the company claims to use 80% of the profits for tree-planting efforts and only keeps a small portion for itself. They estimate 1 tree can be planted for every 45 searches.
Other companies, and even celebrities, are taking action in response to this crisis. Apple has pledged aid, although they didn't release many details. Leonardo DiCaprio's foundation has pledged $5 million dollars.
Can the average person, however, help simply by switching search engines or supporting specific companies? You can help by switching to recycled paper and bamboo bags instead of single-use plastic.
While switching to Ecosia "might make a difference" and requires little effort, the best way to help the rainforest is to give directly to a charity that specializes in a cause and spends donations wisely. This advice comes from Pace University marketing professor Larry Chiagouris.
Art Markman, professor of psychology and marketing at the University of Texas, stated that disaster relief tends to be reactive, driven by the news cycle. Charitable organizations can capitalize on this by making it easy to donate.
"Generally speaking, doing something is better than doing nothing. We tend to do things that are easy."Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas Art Markman
Nonprofit B Lab has certified Ecosia as a for-profit company with a social mission. Ecosia's bigger goal is to combat climate change. It works with groups such as The Nature Conservancy and Eden Reforestation Projects. These groups are both nonprofits.
Although Ecosia can be accessed from any standard web browser, you can download an extension to make it your default search engine. There is also an app for iPhones, iPads, and Android.
Since the flames began, Ecosia has seen a tenfold spike in both app and extension spikes. This has ...
Can Increasing Man-Made Structures Really Bring Back Biodiversity?
Aug 24, 2019
This summer, Dr. Ally Evans has been hard at work pasting a variety of misshapen concrete tiles to breakwaters along Great Britain's Welsh coast. However similar to standard construction work it may look, this is no straightforward coastal repair.
Evans is a postdoctoral researcher at Aberystwyth University in Wales. Along with a team of researchers across her home country and Ireland, her efforts are part of the potentially groundbreaking "Eco Structure" project.
While coastal tiling does not immediately bring to mind the development of biodiversity, the aim of this project is to do exactly that. By conducting long term, field-based research, the Eco Structure project hopes to determine what materials and shapes, when affixed to coastal defense structures, renewable energy infrastructure, and other marine-based construction, will be best to revive ecologically dying coastal areas.
The team is trying to address a fundamental challenge in coastal areas. Research has shown that shorelines filled with artificial structures have 45 percent fewer species that natural ones in similar areas.
In a period of rising sea levels, plummeting marine biodiversity, and growing human populations, whether or not man-made structures are a good habitat for marine life is a serious issue. As coastal cities grow, their shorelines become harder. More than 50 percent of the coastline is made up completely of artificial structures such as piers and seawalls in major coastal urban areas such as New York, Hong Kong, and Sydney. Up to one billion people are likely to be at risk of coastal flooding by the year 2030, which means that many other areas will become hardened as well to protect them.Ensure quality marine marine life habitats by switching out your single-use bags and bottles for reusable ones. Get yours from Custom Earth Promos today.
Evans and her team are researching ways to eco-engineer these structures so that they both look and act more natural. The working theory is that by mimicking rocky coastlines, more biodiversity will be attracted to the area. As Evans puts it, "complexity will attract diversity of life."
"What we are hoping is that the extra layer of topography we are adding will attract more diverse communities more like what we might see on a natural habitat."Aberystwyth University Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Ally Evans
Evans says that many of the ecological problems posed by traditional coastal structures are the result of the materials they are made out of. For example,
"Rock surfaces on a breakwater tend to be quite smooth compared to natural rocky habitats, which makes it much harder for marine life to take hold."Aberystwyth University Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Ally Evans
It is also becoming apparent that hard structures place in places that normally don't have them cause further ecological damage. A growing body of research points to hard features built on sandy shorelines as stepping stones for the introduction of ...
IUPUI to Produce New Produce with Garden Expansion and New Tools
Aug 21, 2019
The Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Urban Gardens' expansion will be almost a third of space.
Located on the southwest corner of campus, the gardens will introduce new produce, including vined fruit and gourds, such as watermelons, pumpkins, and cantaloupes. The new 1,408 square foot patch is on a hill. To combat erosion, the new plants will act as a mat that will hold the soil together.
"We'll be putting down straw to prevent erosion as things grow. We already have multiple classes wanting to help plant and get this established."Office of Sustainability Director Jessica Davis
The gardens are expected to yield other new produce, including corn, squash, and honey. This food will eventually show up at IUPUI's student-run food pantry, Paw's Pantry, IUPUI's monthly Fresh Produce Market, and in your food at the dining hall.Bring a reusable bag the next time you go to buy fresh produce. Get yours today from Custom Earth Promos.
The tilling of the expansion also marked the debut of new equipment for the Office of Campus Faculty Services. A collaboration with the sustainability office and a $12,000 grant allowed IUPUI grounds members to implement an arsenal of new, electric equipment—two tillers, nine leaf blowers, nine weed trimmers, five chainsaws, two pole saws, and two gasoline free push mowers.
They came from Greenworks Commercial and were received early this summer. Along with being greener, the tools are much quieter and don't vibrate as much.
Grounds program manger, Jesse Beck, quickly realized that these tools allows him his team more freedom to do their job. The electric equipment has a volume of less than 85 decibels. This is easier on the staff hearing and lets them work both early in the morning and late at night if needed. The zero-emissions equipment also allows the crew to work on Knozone Action Days. Knozone is an initiative to make Central Indiana one of the Midwest's most sustainable, livable regions.
"All of the research buildings are 100 percent fresh air intake. Now, when you're walking around the buildings working, you're not putting gas fumes into the building." Grounds Program Manager Jesse Beck
Grounds services manager, Clay Collins, also loves the Greenworks equipment. That he said it works so great that his office is considering purchasing two of their electric riding mowers.
"They perform just as well as gas-powered equipment." Grounds Services Manager Clay Collins
Another team-up between the Office of Sustainability and the Office of Campus Faculty Services is coming. More than 4,000 square feet of land will be excavated for a pollinator garden. On September 10 and 11th, volunteers will plant native flowering species with the goal of attracting bees and butterflies, among other pollinators.Attract pollinators to your own garden by using seed paper to help get it started.
This project is partly funded by $3,000 sponsorship from Rolls-Royce. This initiative will ...
